Lace Types in the Beauty Industry

Human Hair Wigs all feature a section of lace usually near the part of the wig and the hairline. The lace is meant to be able to give a “scalp” look to your wig, making your wig look more natural. Depending on the wig, the size of the lace will differ.

Lace Front, Closure Wig, Full Lace Wig

The main sizes of lace are lace front, closure, and full lace wigs. If we start with closure wigs, the units feature lace in usually 4” x 4” or 5” x 5” sections. These wigs have the least amount of lace and are ideal for individuals who aren’t comfortable with lace or simply don’t love lace. However, closure wigs do limit styles that will look natural as the lace does not provide a hair line look from ear to ear. Next would be lace frontal wigs. These wigs come in two different sizes: 13” x 4” and 13” x 6”. Both options feature lace from ear to ear, with 4” offering a 4” part and the 6” offering a deeper part. Lastly, we have the full lace wigs. These wigs have lace on the entire 360 degrees of the unit. These wigs offer the most versatility in styling and can even be worn in a ponytail while still looking natural.

Now that we understand the size of the lace, it’s time to consider the type of lace. The hair industry currently has many types of lace, we will look at three different types.

Medium Brown Lace

The medium brown lace would be the thickest of the different types of lace. This lace is also the darkest colour of lace. This lace can still be tinted to match the individual’s skin tone if the lace is too dark or too light. It is recommended that this lace is bleached to get the best result in how natural the lace appears after the install of your wig. Medium brown lace is usually referred too as “Swiss Lace”.

Transparent Lace

Next we will look at transparent lace. This lace is the lightest in colour. It’s highly recommended that individuals who have fair skin tones use transparent lace. This lace would be the most natural looking. Transparent lace is also thinner in compared to medium brown lace. This lace is still very durable. Don’t think that it’s less durable because it’s thinner. Thinner lace makes the hairline of the wig melt better once the wig is installed.

HD Lace

Lastly, HD lace. This is the highest quality lace and a melt goddess of lace! HD lace MELTS. It is the most discreet lace giving you the best hairline possible. This lace is light in tone but can easily be tinted or coloured with your makeup powder if you find the colour is just too fair for your complexion. This lace is also the thinnest. That is what makes it so easy to melt into the skin and give you a flawless install. HD lace is also the most expensive lace. All that melt is worth the cost though, right?

How to Pick Which Lace?

The lace that is best for you depends on a few things. First, think of the look you want to achieve. If you want that deep side part that many of our Dolls love, you’ll need a 13” x 6” lace. If you don’t love the feel of lace, then definitely go with a closure wig. It’s important to consider the desired result when deciding which lace to go with. Also, you need to consider your budget. The more lace, and the better quality of lace, the most the wig will cost. Closure wigs with 4” x 4” lace will usually the most affordable wigs available. HD Lace with 13” x 6” lace will most likely be for those who are willing to invest in their wigs.
